Manage SSH Keys
Your Ultra.sh VPS panel lets you control which SSH keys can log in as root, so you can add trusted keys or revoke access without rebuilding the server. If you do not have a key, you can follow our Generate an SSH Key Pair guide.
Add or Remove SSH Keys
- Log in to the panel from your client area. Open Services, then your VPS, and click Log in to panel.
- Select the VPS you want to manage.
- Click Settings, then open the Security tab.
- In the SSH Keys section, paste each public key on its own line to add it, or delete a line to remove that key.
- Click Save.
Saving applies the key list right away, but the VPS needs to be running, and a restart may be required before the change takes effect. If the VPS is stopped, start it; if a new key still does not work, restart the VPS and try again.
Removing a key here revokes its access immediately. Keys added directly on the server, for example by editing authorized_keys yourself, are separate: they keep working even if they are not listed here, and nothing you do in this section affects them.
Test the Connection
- From your computer, connect with the key you added. Replace
SERVER_IPwith the IP address of your VPS. - On macOS and Linux, run
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_ultrash -p 22 root@SERVER_IP. - On Windows PowerShell, run
ssh -i $env:USERPROFILE\.ssh\id_ed25519_ultrash -p 22 root@SERVER_IP. - If the connection succeeds, the key is active.
- If it fails, confirm the VPS is running and that you saved the change.
Troubleshooting
- Connection refused or timed out: Confirm the VPS is running. The SSH key list only applies while the server is on.
- Permission denied (publickey): Check that you pasted the complete public key, including its
ssh-ed25519orssh-rsaprefix, on its own line in the SSH Keys section, and that you are connecting asroot. - A removed key still works: Make sure you clicked Save after removing it and that the VPS was running when you saved, then restart the VPS and try again.
