Connect to a VPS via SSH

Early Access: Ultra.sh is currently in early access. Features, plans, and documentation may change as we continue to improve the service. If anything here does not match what you see, open a support ticket and let us know.

Connect to a VPS via SSH

SSH, or Secure Shell, gives you remote access to your VPS from a terminal or SSH client. Use it to run commands, manage files, and configure your server as the root user.

You connect as root: SSH logs you in as the root user, with full administrative access to your VPS. Review a command before running it, especially one that modifies system files or deletes data.

Before You Begin

You will need:

  • The IP address of your VPS
  • The username root
  • Your root password, or an SSH key added to the VPS
  • Port 22
  • An SSH client, such as OpenSSH or Termius

Find Your VPS IP Address

  • Sign in to your client area. Open the 1 Services tab and select your VPS, then click the 2 Log in to panel button.

  • Click Confirm and sign in on the Confirm your account screen.
  • In the 3 Overview tab, click your server's 4 card in the Servers list to manage your server.

  • Navigate to the 5 Settings tab at the top, select the 6 Hardware tab and copy the 7 ADDRESS value (for example 192.142.41.30). Do not include the /24 suffix.

Choose a Login Method

You can log in to your VPS with a password or an SSH key.

  • Password: Reset the root password from Settings > Security in the panel. The new password is shown only once, so save it right away. See Reset the Root Password.
  • SSH key: Add a public key when you order your VPS, or later from Settings > Security > SSH Keys in the panel. See Generate an SSH Key Pair and Manage SSH Keys.

Password login over SSH: Root password logins over SSH only work while the Password login over SSH switch in Settings > Security is on. If it is off, log in with an SSH key instead.

Connect With OpenSSH

OpenSSH is a command-line SSH client built into Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS, and most Linux distributions.

  • Open PowerShell on Windows, or Terminal on macOS and Linux.
  • Run the following command, replacing SERVER_IP with your VPS IP address:
ssh -p 22 root@SERVER_IP
  • If you log in with an SSH key that has a custom filename, pass it with -i. On macOS and Linux, use:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_ultrash -p 22 root@SERVER_IP
  • On Windows PowerShell, use:
ssh -i $env:USERPROFILE\.ssh\id_ed25519_ultrash -p 22 root@SERVER_IP

Accept the Host Key

  • On your first connection, SSH displays the host's fingerprint and asks whether to continue connecting.
  • Confirm that the IP address matches the one shown in the panel.
  • Enter yes and press Enter to trust the host.
  • If you are logging in with a password, enter your root password when prompted.
  • If you are logging in with a passphrase-protected key, enter the passphrase instead.

Stop if a saved host key changes unexpectedly: Do not continue if SSH warns that a previously saved host key has changed and you were not expecting a reinstall or server change. Confirm the IP address before retrying.

Connect With Termius

Termius is an SSH client available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. It supports saved hosts, SSH keys, and SFTP.

  • Download and install Termius from the official Termius download page.
  • Open Termius and go to Hosts.
  • Click New Host.
  • Enter a label for your VPS.
  • Enter your VPS IP address in Address.
  • Enter 22 in Port.
  • Enter root in Username.
  • Enter your root password in Password, or attach your private key under Keys.
  • Click Save, select the host, then click Connect.
  • Accept the host-key prompt if the address matches your VPS.
